...the Snack-a-day project has ended. Hope you enjoyed it. Near the end it was getting a little tiresome really, but it was still a success. I managed to try some new things, write about some old favorites, and delve a little deeper into my neighborhood's snack scene.
The snack scene is changing. New snacks push out the old, veteran vendors exit the game with no one to replace them, and the lure of convenience foods is great. The intent was never to document for posterity's sake, but it will certainly be interesting to see what happens as Bangkok continues to level old neighborhoods to make way for the new condominiums and shopping malls. It is well under way.
.....
Somewhere on Silom road an Isaan man pushes his cart along with traffic, stepping over garbage piles, past smelly drainage grates, and around gawking tourists. He turns down a dark alley for some respite but is followed by an agent of CP fresh, a convenience food store run by the largest agribusiness conglomerate in Thailand. While no one is looking, the faceless CP Fresh man buys a bag of an almost forgotten snack before he brains the vendor, then disappears back onto the busy streets.
.....
There is more to come. Snack a day is finished, but I am not. If in fact you are still reading, here's a link to last year's snack a day, and this year's snack a day. You can always revisit the good times when you are feeling low, or just very bored.
