Preceded by the number one hit single "Tik Tok", Ke$ha's debut album, "Animal" was expected to follow in its footsteps and become a success with critics and music lovers. It may be appreciated by the music lovers, but the critics have a different opinion about it. The album comes off as a cheap immitation of the pop heavyweights that are on the scene right now. Ke$ha does in fact write all her lyrics on the album which I applaud her for, but while the lyrics progress one may wonder why she did not ask for any help. Though not a complete disaster, many people may be disappointed by what they hear.
The album's opening track, "Your Love Is My Drug", is one of the few tracks on the album that give it some life. In the song Ke$ha actually sounds like she is alive, which does not come across in most of the songs. It is a catchy pop track that will grab the attention of the listener. Unfortunately the pull is not strong for long. As the album continues, tracks like "Tik Tok" and "Kiss N Tell", come off as big, Auto-Tuned messes that completely make her voice sound like something it is not. It makes me wonder how the former of the two even made it to number one. Another "good" track comes in the form of "Take It Off", while many critics call this song the worst on the album, I found it enjoyable. Of course, Ke$ha's voice is altered beyond recognition, but the lyrics and beats are fun and allows the listen to actually enjoy it. The album does not get much better when forgetful tracks such as "Stephen", "Party at a Rich Dude's House", and "Dinosaur" come off extremely childish and poorly written. The tracks cause the listener to become somewhat annoyed and the album has not even come close to be finished. The second single, "Blah Blah Blah", is a sort of guilty pleasure. With the help of 3oh!3, the track is a great pop song that does not take it self too seriously, but after more than a couple of listens I grew tired of it fast. What actually made me like the album a little were the tracks "Hungover", "Backstabber", and "Dancing With Tears in my Eyes". "Hungover", the first good ballad, is nothing special, but is a type of song I would like her to venture into more. "Backstabber" is a track about throwing your middle finger to your best friend for doing you wrong. The track is enjoyable and is on repeat most of the time for me. The hidden gem of the album, and it shines very bright indeed, is "Dancing With Tears in my Eyes". The song is sung by Ke$ha with so much emotion and I hope she will create more tracks like this one on her next album. It is a beautiful creation with heartfelt lyrics and great beats to go with it. "Blind" is the last decent song on the album. Not great, but not terrible, it gives the album a tiny breathe of air to survive. However, the album comes to a horrible closing and dies with the last two tracks, "Boots & Boys" and "Animal". The album should have stopped at twelve tracks because I always turn the album off when these songs are about to play. Forgetful lyrics and bad production cause them to become garbage.
Ke$ha's debut is nothing spectacular and I may not have even purchased it if it did not have the seven dollar price tag on it, but some tracks are enjoyable. My recommendation is download certain songs only because the rest of the tracklist is not worth your time or money. The album has no life and I felt that she created the album for the money and not for her love of music. What she has on the album is what the entire pop industry is doing, but everyone else does it better. While the upbeat, catchy, pop songs are good, I personally enjoyed her "ballads" much more. Some tracks show off the vocals that she is capable of, maybe showing that she can have a successful future in the music industry, but three-fourths of the album is filled with garbage that shows that she will be gone in a year. I enjoyed a few of the songs, four of the fourteen, and I am sure a lot of people will like them as well, but the album shows nothing creative or original and for that gets a 68% from me. Ke$ha next time more ballads, less pop garbage.
