Just hours before Justin Bieber was to perform on stage in Montreal came word that the Biebs is being sued by a local promotion company.
Team Productions, an event promoter, is seeking damages of $650,000, plus interest, from Bieber for defamation.
The lawsuit, filed in Quebec Superior Court on Monday, claims that Team Production's reputation was "destroyed by one single tweet" by Bieber "one of the most popular entertainers in the world."
The lawsuit claims that the promotion company had a deal with the Canadian-born singer/songwriter to appear at an event at the Beach Club, west of Montreal, on Aug. 22, 2015. The deal also called for Bieber to promote the event through his considerable social media following on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
The lawsuit also noted that Bieber has more than 80,000,000 Twitter followers and 67,000,000 Instagram followers.
Bieber was to be paid $250,075 for signing the initial agreement and another $175,000 five days prior to the travel date of the event.
In the lawsuit, Team Productions claims it expressed concern that Bieber was "not publicizing the event as required" and then "initiated discussions for a discount" on the second payment due to Bieber's "failure to fulfill his publicity obligations in accordance with the agreement ."
However, Bieber did not appear at Beach Club after contract negotiations broke down.
On the morning of the event, Bieber tweeted: "Montreal due to promoter of today's event breaking his contract and lying I will not be able to attend today's event. I'm sorry."
It was retweeted by more than 37,000 users within an hour, and was widely reported in the media, including TMZ. It was "Liked" by 46,500 others, according to the lawsuit.
"To be publicly branded a liar by on the most recognizable persons in the world was devastating for the business of the Plaintiff," the lawsuit said.
In seeking damages, the lawsuit said "Team Productions has been unable to promote any other events, it's reputation and credibility have been completely destroyed."
Team Productions had previously organized and promoted the 18th birthday party for Kylie Jenner in August of 2015.
